The One With the 250th Birthday of the U.S.

 

 

Today is July 4, 2026. In essence, the 250th anniversary of the United States. Throughout the year, leading up to this anniversary, I tried to make sure students I had were aware of this. We tried to impress upon them the importance of the Declaration of Independence, studying several times and even participating in the Icivics competition to have students at as many middle schools as possible read the Declaration of Independence to commemorate the occasion.

Along with that, we have spent the past three days trying to remember the 250th anniversary. We went to the movie Young Washington on July 2 (the actual day of independence).  We watched the Disney 250th celebration of America on July 3 and 4th. We saw the Horribles parade this morning - which had a huge flag and the Danvers Minutemen. We watched Jonny Tremain earlier today. We are currently watching Ken Burn's American Revolution documentary (episode 1) as I type this!!!

The One With the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord

 

 

Yesterday was the 250th anniversary of the opening battle of the Revolutionary War. Not too surprisingly, Massachusetts has decided to really do the anniversary in spectacular fashion.

 

Although I would have preferred to be there in person - and ode to my old Natick Minuteman Days - they actually held the events on the real day, April 19th (which was also the date of our family Easter Party and dance class from Bri and Kiff). As a result, I got up early and watched the reenactment on TV.

 

The TV experience was not too bad. I also live streamed the event, too. What was interesting is seeing a former Natick minuteman there, Marco. 

 

Overall, it was a really cool event...and narrated quite eloquiently, too. I'm glad to have seen it even virtually...and remembering the event is important!

The One With the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party

 

 

As a history teacher and Natick Minuteman re-enactor, it is incumbent that I make a note that today is an important anniversary of one of the most memorable Patriotic events of all time. Today is the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. 

As a person who has re-enacted it, it is definitely a memorable event. Although I could not attend in person today - Bri had a concert at Salem State - I tweeted about it and posted on Facebook. But, I also knew I had to blog about it.

I did get a chance to catch some almost live video and watched the web cam of the event to be there in spirit!!!

The One With the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Massacre

Today is one of those days that represents a milestone moment in American history. The landmark anniversary of an important event that shaped the lives of our country.

250 years ago today on King Street, the Boston Massacre occurred. As tempers flared and Patriots confronted the British, the event is often viewed as one the galvanized Bostonians - and eventually Americans - against British occupation.

To honor this day, we discussed the event in class and I even showed the video linked here from School Tube.

Today is a day to remember the lives lost on that day and to honor a moment that changed American forever.
